Satellite images hint at something fishy

Thursday, 25th June 2020

After the June 15 Indo-China clash in Eastern Ladhak’s Galwan Valley China and India have been involved in military and diplomatic discussions for disengaging military troops along LAC. But in the midst of the discussions undertaken, a new picture is coming up…As per the Satellite images, it is seen that China’s aggression still persists which is why they have constructed a defensive setup at the location of the June 15 spat that had killed 20 Army personnel from the Indian side.

In the reports from senior Army officials it was stated that “the tent which was removed on June 15 has been reported back by our ground troops at PP-14 (Patrolling Point 14)”. However, until now we haven’t received any confirmation or denial from the Indian Army’s side of the presence and visibility of any sort of Chinese structure through the images captured by the satellite. The Maxar (Renowned Space Tech Company) images captured on the 22nd of June 2020 show how China has constructed a defensive setup for itself “astride” Line of Actual Control in vicinity to PP-14.

This defensive setup has come into being between the 16th of June and the 22nd of June as the satellite images captured by Planet Labs on the 16th of June; i.e. one day after the clash do not reflect any such defensive infrastructure.

A statement from PM’s office made on the 20th of June read as follows: “As regards transgression of LAC, it was clearly stated that the violence in Galwan on 15 June arose because Chinese side was seeking to erect structures just across the LAC and refused to desist from such actions”.

AL Chavan; Lt General (retd) who had also served as 3rd Infantry Division’s Division Commander, after studying the situation, told to The Indian Express: “it appears to be a proper defensive position which has been developed by the Chinese”. He said it appears that “the hillside, which is to the southern side, has also got some defensive positions”

He further said: “Between June 15 and June 22, it is clear that the Chinese have developed that position,” Chavan added that “about 20-30 soldiers can occupy the position” that makes a more or less equilateral triangle “with approximately 65 meters frontage”.

He also said that whether the defensive position was constructed on the Chinese or on Indian side of LAC was not very clear. It’s “because without an accurate survey and enlarged maps, ascertaining the exact alignment of the LAC as claimed by the two sides is not possible”.

However, in this context he also said that “definitely one thing is clear that it appears to be astride the LAC,”
