Tuesday, 7th July 2020

There are many forested belts in the scenic state of Uttarakhand and each of these make a habitat for many rare wild animals. The Leopards or ‘big cats’ that live in these forested shelters often move out of their shelter in search of prey. On this Monday evening one such ‘big cat’ attacked and killed a small child who was just 1 and ½ year old. This unfortunate incident occurred in the Almora town of Uttarakhand. According to forest officials, this is the 4th such incident that has occurred in the state since the end of April.

Sanchita Verma (Range Officer; Almora Forest Range) said that the leopard had attacked the child outside the child’s house in the Udal Village (Almora district).

Verma further said: “The boy Harshit was playing in the ground near his house when the leopard suddenly pounced on him and dragged him towards the forest area. His body was later recovered from the nearby bushes 800 meters away from the house,”

“We rushed to the spot on getting information from the villagers about the incident. We are now planning to set up cages and camera traps near the place where the incident took place to catch the leopard,” she added.

Verma also said that the boy’s dead body was given to the boy’s relatives later towards the evening.

Praveen Kumar (conservator of forest; Northern Circle-Kumaon) said: “The victim’s family will be sanctioned Rs 3 lakh as ex gratia from the state forest department. So far a cheque of Rs 50,000 has been provided to his family members,”

Similar incidents have occurred in the past too. On the 29th of June, a teenage girl of 12 years was killed by leopard in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district. On 23rd of June, a woman of 54 years of age became the prey of a leopard in Uttarakhand’s Nainital district. On 7th of June, another teenage girl was killed by leopard in Nainital’s Ramnagar area. On the 29th of April, a man of 42 years of age became the leopard’s prey in Uttarakhand’s Almora district.
