Monday, 20th July 2020
40,000 new cases were reported in 24 hours with a single-day death toll of 681. 1.11 million people in India have been infected by the virus and 27,497 have lost their lives until now. 7 lakh people have recovered and 4 lakh cases are active. Maharashtra continues to be the worst-hit state.
The case fatality rate (CFR) has reduced (below 2.5%), the Health Ministry said yesterday. The country’s CFR is 1.78% lower than the world’s average, at 2.49%. CFR of Union Territories and 29 states is lower than the national average, and 14 states have recorded a CFR below 1%.
Patients with symptoms “reporting of cases to the hospital within 24-72 hours” has resulted in this CFR drop. Many of the deaths in Maharashtra and Gujarat could have been “avoidable”.
