PM Modi has approved for establishing first central university having Buddhist studies centre in Ladakh. Excluding medicine and engineering, every other degree such as liberal arts and basic sciences will be offered by the university.
There was meeting held on Monday to inspect the measures taken in the union territories of Ladakh, and Jammu and Kashmir in one year and the meeting was attended by Union home minister Amit Shah, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, external affairs minister S Jaishankar and other top officials. PM approved of the plan to establish the centre in order to increase the quality of people’s lives.
The Parliament was requested to remove the special status Jammu and Kashmir had in the constitution, by the centre on the 5th of August 2019, and form two new Union Territories. This would boost security as well as development as they are monitored directly by the centre.
A formal proposal is to be given by the education ministry for the plan. After the approval from the Union cabinet, enactment of a central legislation should be approved by the parliament.
The university is going to have a centre for Buddhist Studies for Ladakh’s Gelug and Kagyu sect of Tibetan Buddhist population. The human resource development ministry also proposed to keep the university accessible for Himachal Pradesh’s students from Lahaul and Spiti districts after the Rohtang La tunnel opens.
