Please the Nag Devta this Nag Panchami!
Friday, 24th July 2020
Nag Panchami is an auspicious occasion and one of the most significant festivals of the Hindus. It falls in the Hindu month of ‘Sravana’ and comes right after the Hariyali Teej. This year Nag Panchami will be celebrated tomorrow; i.e. 25th of July. The day belongs to the Nag Devta (Snake God). This is one of the most ancient Indian festivals celebrated during the monsoons. The festival comes around the months of July-August as per the Western calendar.
Nag Panchami is also differently referred to as Nagul Chavithi or Nag Chaturthi. In the western Indian state of Gujarat this festival is observed a couple of days later when compared to the other states of India. This year Nag Panchami will be observed in Gujarat on the 8th of August. In the state of Andhra Pradesh, the festival is observed right after Diwali.
Puja rituals
One of the prominent rituals during the festival is offering milk to the deity; i.e. the Naga Devta. This is a very ancient Indian tradition and is believed to ward off all kinds of evils. Observing fast is a part of the Nag Panchami rituals. Clay idols of snakes are crafted at homes prior to the festival and are adorned with kumkum, haldi, milk and flowers. Also, flowers as well as milk are kept as a tribute in vicinity to snake holes and burrows.
