Since the lockdown was eased at the end of March, there has been a rise of 90% in the number of cases and India’s number of coronavirus cases hit 2 million in just 158 days. 42% of the fresh cases have been reported by Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal and Bihar.
The stats reached five lakh on 26th of June and another half million was recorded on 16th of July. On July 28th, India exceeded 1.5 million and 2 million on 6th of August. The imposition of nationwide lockdown procured some time to set up beds, infrastructure for testing and isolation centres.
If the figures go up at the same rate, in another two weeks there might be million cases more. However, the number of patients recovered has gone up to 13.70 lakh, exceeding the number of active cases by 7,32,835 as recorded on Thursday by Union health ministry.
“The progressively increasing daily new recoveries are due to a focused attention on surveillance, containment and effective clinical management. India created a network of Covid Dedicated Hospitals to manage the cases”, the ministry said. It added that coronavirus deaths in India remains the lowest when compared with many countries.
