After Dhoni, Raina declares retirement

Tuesday, 18th August 2020

Suresh Raina makes his decision of retiring from cricket known to BCCI almost a day after the decision was announced in public. The Board after hearing from Raina was all praises for this ex-cricketer and talented all-rounder in the history of Indian Cricket’s limited-overs format. Raina’s announcement of retirement came just a few minutes after the announcement of retirement by his mentor, M.S Dhoni thereby surprising many!

“Attacking left-hand batsman Suresh Raina officially communicated to BCCI on Sunday about his decision to retire from international cricket,” said BCCI. Raina’s career in international cricket spanned across 13 years and 18 Tests, 78 T20Is and 226 ODIs find a place in his cricketing portfolio. Also, he had been the Captain of Team India for a brief period though.

“Under his captaincy, India registered a 3-2 series victory in West Indies and a 2-0 win over Bangladesh in ODIs and a 2-0 T20 International series win in Zimbabwe,” the BCCI statement added.

Raina is one such player who has debuted with a Century in Tests. He is also the first among all Indian cricketers to slam many ‘hundreds’ in all the 3 gaming formats and all of his centuries were acquired by him out of India.

“Suresh Raina has been one of the key performers in limited overs cricket for India. Coming lower down the order and playing some of the match-winning knocks requires a lot of skill and talent,” said BCCI president Sourav Ganguly in a statement.

“He along with Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni formed a solid middle order for India in ODIs. I wish him and his family all the very best,” added Ganguly.

Similar sentiment echoed in the statements made by Jay Shah, BCCI Secretary.

“Suresh Raina has been arguably one of the finest T20 batsmen. A live wire on the field, Raina’s prowess as a left-handed batsman was exhibited throughout his cricketing career…“A big match player, Raina’s cameo against Australia in the quarterfinal in the 2011 World Cup was a testimony to his glittering career that followed. I wish him all the very best in the second innings of his career,” stated Shah.
