The rate of suicide committed by farmers or any other member associated with the farming sector in India has undergone a marginal drop in the year 2019 when compared to the year 2018. Thus, the net share of suicides in the total number of suicides in the country has dropped from 7.7% to 7.4% in this corresponding time period.

 

A profession-specific break-up of the various types of suicides taking place in the country has been provided through a 2019 report submitted by the Accidental Deaths & Suicides in India. The report was published by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The report showed that the suicide rate of daily wagers stood at 23.4% while the suicide rate of house wives stood at 15.4%. In the year 2018, the suicide rate for daily-wagers was bit lower. It stood at 22.4%, while the suicide rate for housewives stood at 17.1% which implies that it was a bit higher than that of the wage earners.

 

Last year net suicides coming from cultivators, farmers and agricultural laborers stood at 10,281. In the year 2018, the number was 10,349 and among that number farmer suicide stood at 5,957 and suicides of agricultural laborers stood at 4,324.

Maharashtra took the lead in terms of farmer suicides followed by Karnataka, then Andhra Pradesh, next Madhya Pradesh and then Chhatisgarh/Telengana.

In the year 2019 the number of suicides recorded in the states of Orissa, Bihar, West Bengal, Manipur, Uttarakhand, Delhi, Puducherry, Lakshadweep, Chandigarh, and Daman & Diu stood at Zero apparently.
