Modi Government gives its nod for foreign donations to the temple

Thursday, 10th September 2020

The famous Golden Temple, one of the most sacred pilgrimage destinations for the Sikhs will now be receiving foreign donations. This is the first time in history that such a thing has happened since the year 1984. According to sources the government of PM Modi has given a sanction for foreign donations to the temple for the forthcoming 5 years. Post the Operation Blue Star, the system of foreign donations to the Harmandir Sahib (another name for the Golden Temple) was stopped. This issue was brought before the Centre several times by the SGPC. Gurcharan Tohra, the ex SGPC President was the first one to raise this issue and in the recent times, the SGPC has raised the issue again in the month of May 2020.

“Incumbent president Gobind Singh Longowal raised this issue with Union Ministers Rajnath Singh and Amit Shah over the past two years to demand opening of foreign donations for the Golden Temple. It was a long pending demand. There was no reason behind blocking of funding to the Golden Temple, which spends big amount on the humanitarian work and running a free kitchen. Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal also played a role in convincing the Union government to open the funding,” a SGPC official said.

As an important institution, the SGPC had never been one of the disputers in this dispute between the Centre and Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, the Sikh militant.

This opening of the foreign donation is but a massive relief for the SGPC in the current year as the offerings at the Temple has been affected badly due to the Covid-19 crisis. Each year, the Golden Temple spends over Rs 40 crore on the running of a community kitchen providing free food to all. Donations to the Temple had gone beyond Rs 250 crore the previous year and it happens to be the main source of income of SGPC for running its operations with the temple having about 12,000 employees.
