As tensions swell between Beijing and Washington, recently a Chinese government advisor added fuel to fire and said the new US President-elect Joe Biden is most certainly a “very weak” President who somebody who could spark off a war with China.
Zheng Yongnian, who is the Dean of the Advanced Institute of Global and Contemporary China Studies said their country should shed all illusions about an improved relationship with the America under its new president. On the contrary, he said, China should prepare herself for a tough approach from Washington.
Yongnian said in his analysis that if Biden does not find a way to sort out his domestic snarls, he might take an easy way out and turn against China. In comparison with President Donald Trump, he said, Trump was not interested in war as he was not interested in freedom and democracy, however, Biden is. He advised his government to find every opportunity to restore their stance with the US.
Mentioning the current state of the American society, Yongnian said it is “torn apart” right now and there is nothing that Biden can do about it at the moment. So Biden “might take advantage of the public resentment towards Beijing after he entered the White House”, he added.
The last few years has seen a consistent deterioration in the relationship between US and China. There have been several reasons behind this that include trade, human rights, the coronavirus handling and so on. As per official sources, close to 300 Bills that earmark Beijing have been drawn so far by the Republicans and Democrats in the Congress. Tensions in Hong Kong and Xinjiang have also been arbitrated by the United States.
Specialists of foreign policy in China have also expressed a likelihood of further tensions brewing between the two countries under Biden’s administration.
The new President-elect has called Xi Jinping a “thug” and already adopted a difficult line against the country. His campaign had also indicated that he will take up China on his policies in the far western region of Xinjiang.
