Hansal Mehta’s latest offering, Chhalaang that premiered on Amazon Prime Video on November 13 has been well received by audiences and the director is riding high on the success of the light hearted comedy.
This was Hansal’s first experiment with the comedy genre and he is “very happy” with people’s reactions and the way they have embraced this aspect of his story-telling ability. He said he wants to continue “trying to tell a new story, trying to do different things”.
The director’s family had recently got together for a special screening of the film and he said they enjoyed the work thoroughly. He said it was something they did not “expect” of him, albeit in a “good way”.
Although the film is Hansal’s fifth venture with ace actor Rajkummar Rao, it is admittedly his first with him in a lighter sphere. After churning out brilliant performances by Rao in films like Aligarh, Omerta and Shahid, Mehta presents to his fans yet another shade to the brilliant actor, comedy.
The film revolves around a PT instructor in a semi-government school in Haryana who tries to earn back his dignity through a challenge he throws at his opponent in a swashbuckling moment but later gets committed to it. The film is all about sports, friendship and the state of physical education in a school curriculum in our country.
When Hansal was asked if more comedy can be expected from him in the days to come, he answered like any gifted artiste and said he does not “follow any particular template” He added that he does not know yet what he will come up with next, however, if the story excites him, he will not hesitate. He also cleared that he will keep trying different things and challenging himself as, though he is “not afraid of failing”, he is “afraid of repeating” himself.
Talking about Rao, Mehta said with a lot of pride that he is “one of the best actors of his generation” and like family to him.
The film stars Nushrat Bharuccha as the female lead.
