India bans Chinese Apps
Thursday, 26th November 2020
As per the Government of India, 43 Chinese apps that include AliExpress pose a threat to the country’s national security and hence have banned their use.
177 apps have already been forbidden in India, this includes popular apps Tik Tok, Bingo Live, and PUBG Mobile as well.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology banned these mobile apps under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act.
As per an official press release, the government has cleared that this action was adopted by them on the basis of intelligence and reports submitted by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center, Ministry of Home Affairs, that these apps engage in activities that are “prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order”.
Dr Ajay Data, Founder and CEO, VideoMeet Pvt Ltd. said Indian users also support such a step by the government given the tense geopolitical situation. He also said this is a great opportunity for Indian companies to come up with home-grown apps, that will not only help us go global but also tend to the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission of Govt of India.
Co-founder & MD of cyber security firm SafeHouse Technologies, Aditya Narang said it is imperative that mobile phone users “make sure their mobile phones are protected, secured and encrypted” as the treat to secure user data is on the rise. He pointed out that various apps on phones these days collect huge data that has nothing to do with the service whatsoever.
Varun Saxena, Founder and CEO of Bolo India, said this was yet another “welcome move” from the government against Chinese apps that have always been a threat to privacy.
