Indian Cricket team wins a test match at the Gabba: Learn more about the phenomenal victory

Wednesday, 20th January 2021

The Indian Cricket team etched its place in the game’s history with their scintillating and rather dramatic final hour on the last day of the series against Australia on the latter’s home ground, beating them by 3 wickets to win the back-to-back Test series and in the process coming out as the first-ever Asian team to win a Test at the Gabba.

The series brought to light Team India’s never-say-die attitude despite suffering various setbacks at different stages. On the final day, it was Rishabh Pant who with his match-winning unbeaten knock finally saw his team through with three overs to spare. This was when nobody believed the team could go for a steep target of 329 on a fifth-day pitch at the Gabba.

Others like Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur, and Washington Sundar also have displayed glorious performances that must not be forgotten.

The bowlers were also faced with further challenges of not only handling the red Kookaburra ball along with the extra bounce that is posed by Australian pitches. These balls with their pronounced seam that fade away quickly take sideways movement while in air and out of the equation. Fast bowlers thus are needed to use a lot of shoulders, not to mention the back muscles that take a lot of beating. So newbies Siraj, Thakur, and Natarajan, without much prior experience with such a situation, came out with flying colors.

A Tweet from the great Vivian Richards read, “You don’t just play and love Test cricket for nothing”. He Congratulated the Indian Team calling it a “Brilliant game”.

At one point in time, it seemed like the pandemic would yet again take its toll on the sports scene and the “battle” would not even take place. This, along with a rather bruised and battered team had made victory appear like a very far-fetched possibility.

Despite all odds, the team was brilliantly led by stand-in captain Ajinkya Rahane and they scored 329 runs in the fourth innings, 325 on Tuesday alone.
