With the start of the wintry months, lots of skin woes are setting in and one such skin woe could be eczema. “One of the major reasons it worsens during the winter season is because the skin can’t keep itself moisturized. Moreover, wearing too many layers of clothes along with the use of heaters can cause the skin to turn red and itchy,” stated Dr. Aakriti Mehra (Cosmetologist, Dermatologist, and Trichologist at the Skingenius, Colaba)
In the lines below, she has explained more about the skin condition called ‘eczema’, factors triggering it, and also has talked about the ways of treating it.
Eczema Definition
Eczema (dermatitis) may be defined as a kind of rash that may show up just anywhere on one’s body. Eczema affected skin looks red and inflamed and is very dry and itchy, explains the doctor. Another rather rare symptom of eczema is too much sebum production.
“This happens to be the most common type is atopic dermatitis, which is usually a lifelong condition present since childhood. It is more commonly found in individuals who have a family history of atopy. Moreover, it is seen most commonly in skin flexures and can be triggered by multiple internal or external factors,” she adds.
Cause of Eczema
Dry skin may often lead to eczema. Too much skin dryness may cause the skin to react easily to various types of environmental and other triggers such as dust, pollen, sweat, stress, perfumes, etc leading to the skin condition.
Treatment of Eczema
“The condition occurs because of a gene variation, and therefore there isn’t any cure available. However, it can be managed symptomatically with topical and oral medication as well as a few lifestyle modifications,” says Mehta.
Also, making sure to moisturize the skin generously, steering clear of the triggers are some other ways to treat eczema.
