Tandav Entwined in Controversy as FIR Registered Against Makers

The much-awaited web series of the year, Tandav that had been released on Amazon Prime Video on January 15 has ever since been on the receiving end of trolls and uproars.

The makers of Tandav have been accused of hurting religious sentiments, especially in two scenes of the web series.

The main of the two scenes is one where a play is underway in the first episode titled Tanashah, where actor Zeeshan Ayyub who plays the role of a college student named Shiva, essays the role of Mahadeva. An ensuing conversation between Mahadeva and Narad-Muni is what caused tempers to flare.

The makers later issued a statement of apology and revised the scene which now starts with Shiva’s entry on the stage as Mahadev as the audience cheer him on and then abruptly moves on to show a group of policemen entering the campus to arrest a student.

The second scene that has raised hackles is where the prime minister Devki Nandan Singh, played by Tigmanshu Dhulia, is in conversation with Dalit leader Kailash Kumar, played by Anup Soni, and the former insults him.

Changes have been made in several other scenes as well.

The director of the show took to social media on January 19 wherein he issued an apology to the nation and stated it was not their intention to “hurt or offend the sentiments of any individual, caste, community, race, religion or religious beliefs or insult or outrage any institution, political party or person, living or dead”. The decision was made after a discussion of the issue with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

The series directed by Ali Abbas Zafar and written by Gaurav Solanki of Article 15 fame, stars veterans like Saif Ali Khan, Dimple Kapadia, Sunil Grover, Mohd Zeeshan Ayyub, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Gauahar Khan, Kritika Kamra, Anup Soni, Kumud Mishra, Dino Morea and Sandhya Mridul among others.
