The Government along with opposition parties in Rajya Sabha came to a consensus on Wednesday to allocate more time to the discussion of the farmers’ protests where parties can raise their issues.
However, even before the 15-hour discussion could take off, several members of the House erupted in an uproar and created a ruckus.
Invoking Rule 255 (withdrawing a member) Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu asked three Aam Aadmi Party members- Sanjay Singh, Sushil Kumar Gupta and N D Gupta- to stay away from the proceedings of the House for the rest of the day after they trooped into the Well raising slogans against the farm laws.
The Chairman also, for a brief period, adjourned the proceedings of the Upper House till 9.40 am.
MPs from several opposition parties including Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), Communist Party of India (CPI), Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), had moved the suspension of business notice in the House over the farmer protests, earlier in the day.
On Tuesday, the government had announced in the Lok Sabha that it was prepared to discuss farmer issues both within and without the Parliament, but was received with vehement protests by the Opposition that forced both Houses to call for repeated adjournments.
After the first adjournment, Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar told Lok Sabha that the government is pledged to discuss the issues.
Amid the agitation by Opposition members, he said “Government is ready to discuss issues related to farmers inside and outside Parliament.”
This statement by Tomar came after Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the Congress leader in Lok Sabha stated that 170 farmers have lost their lives during the ongoing agitation against the three contentious farm laws.
According to Chowdhury, “Atrocities are being committed on farmers. Situation is similar to British rule.”
For over 70 days now several farmer associations and unions have been in protests demanding a cancellation of three farm laws, at several points along the Delhi border.
