Thursday, 11th March 2021

Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee said she sustained injuries “after being pushed against her car” on Wednesday, only a few hours after she was done filing her nomination papers to contest the elections from the East Midnapore constituency, Nandigram.

Mamata’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee, also a Trinamool Congress MP has posted a picture of her lying in a hospital bed with her leg in a cast, on Twitter. In the post, he aimed his barbed remarks at the BJP, which has launched itself into a truculent campaign to unseat the two-term chief minister and her party from the state.

He wrote, “BJP brace yourselves to see the power of people of WEST BENGAL on Sunday, May 2nd. Get ready.”

Mamata was on her way to her car after visiting the seventh temple upon filing her papers at the Haldia sub-divisional office headquarters on Wednesday afternoon, when a “few unknown persons pushed the CM against her car and then slammed the door on her foot”, according to Trinamool Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Ray.

As the 66-year old Mamata was being helped into the car, she complained of “chest pain and breathlessness”. She said, “Four-five persons pushed me. The attack was deliberate. My leg has swollen up and I feel feverish and have a headache.”

Neither local police nor even the East Midnapore SP Praween Prakash was present at the location when the incident, which disrupted the Bengal political scenario, occurred. It led to protests across the state in retaliation to the “attack” on the CM.

However, members of the opposition were quick to pick on the blame game and accused the ruling party of “injecting drama into politics” while the latter said the opposition lacked “sensitivity”.

State Congress Chief Adhir Chowdhury said, “This is yet another political drama by the CM. She is also the police minister. One can understand the common citizen’s plight in Bengal if cops cannot ensure security for the police minister.” Shamik Bhattacharya from the BJP said that this was a “major” incident and called for a probe.

When the CM complained of increasing pain, her deputies decided to move her to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata.
