Meghalaya Governor Satya Pal Malik expressed his support on Sunday for farmers in their protest against the three contentious farm laws passed by the Centre. He pleaded with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah to not cause them any further distress.
The Meghalaya Governor also suggested that if the Central Government shifted their stance a little and provided a legal guarantee to farmers of the minimum support price (MSP) for crops, the farmers would yield.
Malik stated that if farmers and soldiers in the country are not happy, it would doom the nation. He said, “None of the laws are in favor of farmers. Wherever one goes, there is a lathi-charge." He added, “They are getting poorer day by day while the salary of government officials and staff increases after every three years. Whatever is sown by a farmer is cheap and whatever he buys is expensive. They do not know how they are becoming poor.”
Malik also said that being from a farmer family himself, he can relate to their dilemma and “will go to any extent” to resolve them.
Since November 28 last year, farmers by the thousands, mostly from Punjab, Haryana, and western UP have been agitating at the gates of Delhi. They are protesting three new farm laws and demanding they be repealed. The government has already had eleven rounds of talks with leaders of farmer associations from across the country. During the previous discussion, the government offered to stall the laws for 1-1.5 years and in the meantime form a committee that will come to a solution. In return, they asked the farmers to return to their homes from the borders.
