India saw its highest single-day spike this year in the number of new Covid-19 cases yesterday as it logged 68,020 cases. As per data from the Union Health Ministry, this takes the total figures to more than 1.20 crore.

The death toll is also seeing a surge with 291 cases recorded in the past 24 hours taking the total to 1,61,843.

The country has been seeing a steady rise in new cases for the 19th day now, making the number of active cases stand at 5,21,808 and the recovery rate dropped to 94.32 percent.

Bearing the maximum caseload, the state of Maharashtra declared they are making plans for a lockdown as residents flout restrictive measures.

With 12,916 fresh cases of Covid-19, more than fifty percent of Italy’s 20 regions have turned into red zones.

The government of Morocco has announced they will suspend all flights to France and Spain due to the swell in coronavirus cases.

In the past 24 hours, Goa has reported 128 new COVID-19 cases, 101 recoveries, and two deaths. The recovery rate in the state is 96.09 percent.

Chhattisgarh saw an increase of 1,423 new Covid-19 cases on Monday, taking their total figures to 3,41,516 cases. With 20 new cases of death, the fatality rate rose to 4.096, while the state has 3,17,239 recovered patients as 19 patients were discharged and 400 others completed their home isolation stay during the day.

Odisha also recorded a total of 3,40,402 Covid-19 cases with the addition of 208 new cases on Monday. As per an official from the state’s health department, they recorded one case of death due to coronavirus, taking the death toll to 1,921. This is the fifth day in a row that the state has reported over 200 new cases.

IIT, Bhubaneshwar has postponed the arrival of its next batch of students, that was scheduled for April 4, as 10 of its pupils tested positive for Covid-19.

Hit by a second wave of the coronavirus pandemic, Karnataka reports its highest number of cases from Bengaluru. The capital city alone reported more than 2,000 fresh cases.

Several parts of India saw a quiet Holi this year as the pandemic caused many state governments to issue restrictions on mass gatherings.

As per the Director-general of WHO Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, there needs to be a further study done on the origins of the Covid-19 pandemic, after he read a report by international experts from their mission to Wuhan in January and February this year. He said, according to the report, it still remains to be studied how the SARS-CoV-2 virus made its way into the human body.

Under India’s “Vaccine Maitri” initiative, Niger and Fiji have received consignments of Indian-made vaccines on Monday. Under this initiative, more than 70 countries have already received vaccines from India.
