Final Campaigning in ‘Nandigram’...

Wednesday, 31st March 2021

A massive roadshow is to be held by Union home minister Amit Shah on Tuesday in Nandigram as part of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s campaign before the upcoming state assembly elections. The party decision came after the chief minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee held an 8 km long roadshow in the same area on Monday.

Both parties view Nandigram as a critical seat of power in the upcoming state elections. BJP has fielded former TMC leader and Mamata’s protégé Suvendu Adhikari who is now a member of their party, in the constituency.

As the battle over the seat intensifies between the TMC supremo and Adhikari over Nandigram, the latter said, “Our leader and India’s strong home minister, Amit Shahji, will hold a roadshow from Reyapara Bridge to Shiv Mandir tomorrow.”

Roadshows are also scheduled in other poll-bound areas days before the campaigning before the state’s second phase of elections comes to an end. Veteran actor and BJP’s star campaigner Mithun Chakraborty will also be seen hitting the roads conducting rallies and roadshows.

Amit Shah is also expected to be seen in two other roadshows including a public rally in Diamond Harbour in South 24 Parganas, Debra and Panskura.

On April 1, the state’s 30 constituencies across four districts will go to the polls. However, the outcome in the East Midnapore seat of Nandigram is what is expectantly awaited by many where Mamata will take on Adhikari.

Nandigram has held a place of prestige for the Trinamool Congress since years as the party has had a history of mass movements there since 2006 right until 2008 against land acquisition. It is believed that Mamata’s work here has played a major role in laying the groundwork for her political resurgence and also shot her to power in 2011. People during that time was trusted Bannerjee with closed eyes and that helped her come out with flying colors during the elections.

A senior TMC leader said, “Banerjee is scheduled to hold at least three public meetings and one roadshow in Nandigram today [on Tuesday]. She started camping in Nandigram from Sunday after the first phase elections were over. Since then she has been holding at least four rallies and roadshows every day apart from attending another meeting.”
