Head coach of Delhi Capitals Ricky Ponting made a big divulgence about opener Prithvi Shaw, days before the commencement of next season of the Indian Premier League or IPL.
The former captain of the Australian squad has been working closely with Prithvi Shaw for the past two seasons of the IPL in the Delhi camp. He reminisced about how the young Indian batsman had plainly refused to bat in the nets after going through a rough patch in the previous season of IPL.
Ricky Ponting said, “He [Prithvi Shaw] had an interesting theory on his batting last year – when he's not scoring runs, he won't bat, and when he is scoring runs, he wants to keep batting all the time.”

He went on to say, “He had four or five games where he made under 10 and I'm telling him, ‘We have to go to the nets and work out (what's wrong)’, and he looked me in the eye and said, ‘No, I’m not batting today’. I couldn’t really work that out.”
Ponting added that it is possible that Shaw has changed as he is aware that the latter has worked a lot over the past few months and the “theory” that he had been harbouring has “hopefully changed”. The former Australian skipper is positive that if this is the case and if they can get the “best out of him, he could be a superstar player.”
Ponting became a part of the DC squad on March 29 and has recently completed his one week of isolation required for him to enter the IPL bio bubble. He said he had not held back at the time in admonishing the young player, stating, “I was going pretty hard at him. I was basically telling him, ‘Mate you’ve got to get in the nets. Whatever you think you’re working on, is not working for you. It's my job as a coach to challenge someone's preparation if they're not getting results.”
Hence, said Ricky Ponting, he “challenged” Shaw who then kept his word and “didn't practice much at all towards the back-end of the tournament, and didn't get many runs towards the back-end of the tournament either.”
Ponting however sees a liking between Prithvi Shaw and Sachin Tendulkar and is confident that the young batsman is destined to make it gig in the international arena.
