Friday, 9th April 2021

An amusing moment ensued in a high fidelity court case as Kapil Sibal ‘disappeared’ just as he was to read a previous judgement in support of his argument that states that the allegations against his client were all based on mere hearsay. The event of sudden disappearance of Advocate Sibal from the court hearing scene has created much uproar.

During the course of the dramatic virtual hearing in the Supreme Court in the case against the former / home minister of the state of Maharashtra, Anil Deshmukh, there arose a sudden moment of humour when the senior lawyer defending the minister Deshmukh, Kapil Sibal went off the screen for some time.

Kapil Sibal ‘vanished’ just as he was about to begin his reading of a previous judgement that would reinforce his argument that his client Anil Deshmukh is innocent of all charges levelled against him and that those are only based on rumour. The moment was actually hilarious for the onlookers and annoying for client Anil Deshmukh

In the moments following the sudden disappearance, Justice SK Kaul, heading the Supreme Court bench noted, “He (Mr. Sibal) appears to be gone.”

Senior lawyer Harish Salve made a wisecrack, “Even the system crashed hearing his arguments.”

Mr. Kapil Sibal rejoined a couple of moments later.

The case turned out to be a blast for the government of Maharashtra and Anil Deshmukh as the Supreme Court refused to give a stay on the decision passed by the Bombay High Court whereby a preliminary inquiry by the CBI has been ordered into former Mumbai Police Chief Param Bir Singh's charges against the former minister and the NCP leader.

Anil Deshmukh had given in his resignation from the post of the Maharashtra Home Minister soon after the CBI probe was ordered by the lower court.

Former police commissioner of Mumbai Param Bir Singh, when he was removed from his post after being charged with dereliction of duty in the Mukesh Ambani bomb scare case in THE February, had written an inflammatory note wherein he had accused the minister of extortion and unlawful promotions, later bringing him to court as well. Param Bir Singh was replaced and transferred to the Home Guards as a result of that incident.

As per Singh’s allegations, Deshmukh was the mastermind in an extortion scheme along with police officer Sachin Waze, who was also taken into arrest after a car laden with the explosives was discovered near the house of industrialist Mukesh Ambani.
