India Records Highest Single Day Spike in Covid-19 Cases with Over 2 Lakh Fresh Infections

India has logged its highest single day spike ever in fresh cases of coronavirus yesterday with 2, 00,739 new infections.

The total cases have now reached 1, 40, 74,564 with 1, 24, 29,564 recoveries, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Thursday.

With 1,038 fatalities, the death toll has reached 1, 73,123, according to the data.

As per the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), with 13, 84,549 samples that were tested yesterday, there have been 26, 20, 03,415 samples tested for COVID-19 up to April 14, 2021.

The national capital, as in several other parts of the country, is seeing a surge in Covid-19 cases and deaths related to it. It recorded its highest number of deaths on Wednesday since November 20, with 104 cases. The biggest crematorium in Delhi, Nigambodh Ghat has been having twice the number of cremations each day due to the swell in Covid-19 related deaths.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is scheduled to hold a meeting with Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal over the grim picture in the capital in connection with the rising Covid-19 cases.

Maharashtra has imposed Section 144 in the entire state until May 1. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has ordered strict monitoring of shop owners who have been allowed to operate during this time. Officials have been asked to look for Covid-19 appropriate behaviour among them and customers. Those in violation of norms will be penalised.

The CM held a virtual meeting with meeting with his cabinet colleagues, divisional commissioners, district collectors, municipal commissioners and police officials where he stressed on effective implementation of restrictive measures.

In Chhattisgarh’s Rajnandgaon, a garbage van was put in use to carry the bodies of those who died due to coronavirus infection. Shocking videos have been released where sanitation workers are seen garbed in full PPE kits, picking up and dumping dead bodies in their vans to be ferried to the cremation ground.

The civil hospital in Gujarat is witnessing serpentine queues of ambulances carrying Covid-19 patients, outside it. The state government however has denigrated the issue stating patients are being admitted after following all necessary formalities as protocols cannot be simply overstepped. They said it was not right to question the level of efficiency of the civil hospital in handling the situation just on the basis of the long queue.

The civil hospital situated in Asarva area of the city, has 1,200 beds dedicated for Covid-19 patients. Since this past week, long queues of ambulances carrying Covid-19 positive patients have been seen outside the hospital campus.

In a recent hearing in the Gujarat High Court on the Coronavirus pandemic situation in the state, it was said, “over 40 ambulances were found queued up outside the civil hospital.”
