Delhi Captains coach Ricky Ponting exalted the abilities and thought process of new captain of the team, Rishabh Pant. He even praised Pant’s leadership skills after the team kicked off their innings in this season of the Indian Premier League, with a flourishing victory. Ponting even went on to state that Pant’s thinking process is comparable with that of Team India skipper Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson.

Pant found his place as the captain of the DC team after its former captain Shreyas Iyer got ruled out of the tournament due to shoulder injury and Ponting suggested that Pant needs to exercise more involvement in the game. Moreover, he praised Pant’s thought process.

Ponting said, “Someone like him (Pant), you want him to get more involved in the game as early as possible, and bat for as long as possible. The way he thinks, he is actually a bit like Virat or Kane. Now, if they are in at the end, you are going to win more often than not no matter how many runs are required.”

The Delhi Captains with Pant at its helm after being appointed captain, took off this season with a sweeping victory against the Chennai Super Kings. Pant’s debut in the captain’s role got appreciated after the team almost effortlessly chased down the opposite side’s 188 runs and Prithvi Shaw struck half-centuries and adding 138 runs for the opening wicket.

Pant’s abilities as a captain had impressed many during the first match against the M S Dhoni led squad of Chennai Super Kings as Ponting also recognised his energy and the improvements he brought in his wicket keeping skills that was seen recently in the course of the country’s series against England.

Acknowledging his abilities, Ponting said, “He is energetic and you can hear that from behind the stumps, he loves being in the contest and he is a winner. He’s just brilliant. The comparisons are always going to be always there for someone who bats like that. Gilly’s keeping is better than Rishabh’s no doubt about that. The way saw him keep on turning pitches in India (vs England), I thought he kept way better than I thought he could.”

The DC coach even added that if Pant continues to improve upon his glove work, he can easily make it to India’s position of first-keeper for the coming 10 years.
