Small polling meets to be held in Kolkata in view of the rise in the recent Covid cases in the state of West Bengal, says WB CM

West Bengal CM declared that only small meetings and rallies would be held in the state

COVID-19 cases has recently spiked remarkably in the state of West Bengal and in view of the current situation Chief Minister of the State, Mamata Banerjee on this Sunday said that her political party Trinamool Congress would hold only small-sized poll meetings in the state capital Kolkata and would deliver very short speeches in the rallies across the various districts of West Bengal where elections would be conducted in the rest of the three election phases.

While speaking to a Television Channel, CM Mamata Banerjee stated that none of her campaign speeches across the state would exceed the time span of 20 minutes and the like while the original time span would have been 50 minutes to about an hour so that crowding at the meeting could be curtailed and social distancing could be put into force to some extent.

"Yes, we have decided to hold small meetings, street corner-type ones, in the city in the campaigning for next three phases. We will not hold any big gathering any more. Also my speeches in the meetings addressed by me will be much shorter," said Mamata Banerjee.

Derek O'Brien, Rajya Sabha member of the Trinamool Congress Party, said in a Twitter message, "Mamata Banerjee will NOT campaign in Kolkata anymore. Only one 'symbolic' meeting on the last day of campaigning in the city on April 26. Slashes time for all her election rallies in all districts. Restricted to just 30 minutes."

The caseload of the COVID-19 infections in the state of West Bengal, where the eight-phased assembly polling is underway in a full-fledged manner, rose to about 6,59,927 cases as the state of West Bengal recorded the highest single-day case spike of 8,419 fresh covid-19 infections on this Sunday, reported a health bulletin.

Twenty-eight new covid-19 fatalities caused the covid-triggered death toll in the state to shoot up to 10, 568, it stated.

In the city of Kolkata the highest new covid case numbers stood at 2,197. Next was the district of North 24 Parganas where the new covid case numbers stood at 1, 860.

The district of North 24 Parganas recorded six new covid triggered fatalities. In Kolkata the number of fatalities stood at 5.
