With the Covid-19 situation in the country continuing to turn grim by the day, the government of India has announced opening up of the vaccination programme for all who are above the age of 18 from the 1st of May 2021. The country logged 2,59,170 fresh cases of coronavirus infection with 1,761 covid triggered deaths 1,54,761 discharges in the span of the last 24 hours, as per data released by the Union Health Ministry.

Meanwhile several states in the country are taking steps to curtail the rapid spread of the deadly virus. Telengana has imposed night curfew from today. While the Supreme Court stayed the UP government's order for lockdown in 5 of its cities, the state government has decided to go on with weekend lockdown starting 8pm this Friday.

The state of Madhya Pradesh has recorded 12,897 new COVID19 cases and 79 deaths in the last 24 hours and their number of active cases stands at 74,558.

The Andhra Pradesh government has declared the closure of the academic year 2020-21 and has announced summer holidays for Classes 1 to 9.

Yesterday, the country had reported 2, 73,810 new COVID19 cases, 1,619 fatalities and 1, 44,178 discharges in last 24 hours, as per Union Health Ministry.

Chief Minister of Odisha Naveen Patnaik said on Tuesday that the state is expecting the return of migrant workers given the Covid-19 situation in the country and has directed officials to be prepared. He has also urged people to act responsibly as the state is faced with "grave danger". The Chief Minister is also preparing the state for exigencies by ramping up hospital beds and oxygen support to meet the surge in demand.

The state of Gujarat reported its highest single day fresh covid cases on Tuesday with 12,206 infections, the first time since they crossed the 12,000-mark. The total number of cases in the state now stands at 4, 28,178 cases. They also recorded their highest number of deaths in a day with 121 patients succumbing to the infection.

The government of UP has decided to open the vaccination programme free of cost for all above the age of 18 from May 1.

The state of Punjab reported 4,673 fresh cases of Covid-19 on Tuesday taking the total figure in the state to 3, 09,316. The death toll in the state is 8,045 with 61 deaths recorded yesterday. The maximum number of deaths was reported from Patiala followed by Amritsar, Ludhiana, Mohali and SBS Nagar.
