Delhi Capitals found themselves at the coveted position at the top of the points table after their comprehensive seven wicket win over Punjab Kings in Match 29 of the Indian Premier League, 2021 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
The Delhi team got off to a brilliant start with Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw taking Punjab head on in the powerplay overs. Chasing a target of 167, the DC batsmen showed stellar performance with Dhawan remaining unbeaten at 69 having batted through the innings. The team reached the target in 17.4 overs after the loss of just three wickets.
Shaw also proved to be a dependable partner to him contributing 39 runs off 22 balls.
Dhawan also went on to get the orange cap after becoming the leading run-scorer of the tournament.
The Delhi bowlers too were in top form. Kagiso Rabada took three wickets while Axar Patel and Avesh Khan registered one dismissal each.
After winning the toss DC captain Rishabh Pant decided to bowl first. The PBKS team was captained by Mayank Agarwal in the absence of KL Rahul who had to leave mid- season on medical grounds. Rahul was diagnosed with acute appendicitis and will have to undergo surgery.
Agarwal managed to put up a score of 99 (not out, off 58 balls) and led his team to get to a total score of 166/6 on his captaincy debut.
On a disheartening night for the Punjab team, a wicket apiece was taken by their bowlers, Harpreet Brar, Chris Jordan, Riley Meredith.
A very out-of-form Nicholas Pooran was replaced by Dawid Malan who in turn did not show much spark playing an ordinary innings on his IPL debut. He scored 26 with one run-a-ball.
