On Sunday, Mamata Banerjee won most spectacularly in West Bengal. BJP, their chief opponent suffered a defeat in the hands of Trinamool Congress, Mamata’s party. In the state of Tamil Nadu, the DMK has won after 10 long years. Kerala has gone to the LDF again. BJP has again come out victorious in the state of Assam.

  1. Mamata Banerjee's Political Party, Trinamool Congress has won 208 seats in the state and is in leading position in five more of 294 seats in the state – thereby improving its tally (209) of year 2016 despite the use of BJP’s near-invincible election machinery, which has most prominently failed to go beyond the double digits. "Bengal has saved India," Banerjee said, criticizing the BJP party for its major loss after the claim of a "double century".
  2. But in Nandigram, she lost to Suvendu Adhikari, her close ex-aide. "I accept the verdict, it is not a big thing," she remarked, adding further that she will reach out to the court regarding the malpractices.
  3. The BJP’s gains in Bengal are significant. In fact, it is now the chief opposition party as its polling tally has gone up from only three seats in the year 2016 to about 80.
  4. In the state of Tamil Nadu, the DMK is back to power and has defeated its key rival, AIADMK which is tied up with the BJP. The DMK of MK Stalin along with its allies have been leading in the 158 seats while 76 seats have gone to AIADMK.
  5. In the State of Kerala the LDF has taken the lead in 99 seats out of 140 and has won the election thereby sticking to a 40 year old tradition in the state. The chief opposition in the state in the state is the Congress-led UDF has taken the lead in just 41 seats.
  6. In the State of Assam BJP has acquired 75 seats out of 126 and is thereby retaining power defeating the Congress.
  7. In Puducherry the AINRC-led alliance has acquired 16 seats out of 30 while the remaining 9 has gone to Congress.
  8. The public voting for these polls was carried out in the months of March-April while the country was reeling under its gruesome second wave of the pandemic with thousands of new cases adding each day.
  9. Alongside the spike in covid cases, several top leaders of all the political parties of India, including PM Modi, led several campaigning rallies that saw large crowds of people gathering at a place or marching together in total disregard to the covid safety rules related to social distancing and wearing of masks.
  10.  "Congratulations to Mamata Didi for Trinamool Congress' win in West Bengal. The Centre will continue to extend all possible support to the West Bengal Government to fulfil people's aspirations and also to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic," wrote Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Mamata Bannerjee in a Twitter message.
