As the counting of votes pertaining to the recently-conducted by-polls to the three seats in the State of Karnataka including a segment of the Lok Sabha was undertaken on this Sunday, the BJP came out victorious in the two constituencies while the chief opposition, the Congress came out victorious in the remaining one.
Among the three the Belgaum by-election Lok Sabha constituency was the only contest that remained undecided still. Mangala Suresh Angadi, a BJP candidate won against Satish Jarakiholi, a Congress Candidate by a narrow margin of about 5240 votes. The latter gave the former a real tough fight in this case. However, the final polling margin is still pending for announcement from the Election Commission. In this context, we are reminded of Suresh Angadi, Mangala’s late Husband and Ex-State Railway Minister who had emerged victorious in the Lok Sabha Elections of the year 2019 from that very segment by a notable margin of more than 3.91 Lakh votes.
However, the Congress Party could not actually wait for EC’s approval and also for the final figures from EC to admit their defeat. “I thank the people of Karnataka who have voted for us in large numbers & we pledge to keep raising people’s voice against BJP Govt,” tweeted D K Shivaumar, Chief of Karnataka Congress.
Meanwhile, Sharanu Salagar, the BJP Candidate emerged victorious from Basavakalyan in the district of Bidar while Basanagouda Turvihal of the Congress Party won from Maski in the district of Raichur. Congress’s Basanagouda Turvihal had contested against BJP’s Pratapgouda Patil. As per the reports from Election Commission, 86,337 votes were casted in favor of Turvihal while 55,731 in favor of Patil, thereby allowing Turvihal to win by a margin of about 30,606 votes. Speaking to the media within his constituency, Patil gave vent to his disappointment regarding the fact that the voters did not cast their vote for the BJP “despite implementing several developmental works.” He added, “The party will introspect on the reasons behind this defeat.”
Sharanu Salagar was contesting against Mala B Narayan Rao, the wife of ex-MLA, the late Narayana Rao and had clearly been leading from the very first round of the counting. Around 11.30 am Salagar’s lead was by about 7, 355 votes and soon afterwards a steady rise in the number of votes garnered allowed him to come victorious with an awesome margin of about 20,629 votes.

According to the final poll figures, Sharanu Salagar secured more than 71,012 votes against Mala B Narayan Rao, who got 50,383 votes. “We thank the voters of Basavakalyan assembly for blessing our candidate Mala B Narayana Rao with over 50,000 votes. We accept the mandate of the voters and promise to work harder to win their faith in the next election,” read a statement from the party’s end.
Meanwhile, CM of Karnataka B S Yediyurappa thanked the voters within his constituency post the victory. “Congratulations to Sharanu Salagar, our candidate who has won the confidence of the people of the constituency,” read the CM’s tweet.
However, Syed Yasrab Ali Quadri, a JD(S) candidate could acquire just 11,042 votes, in spite of the fact that the party was hoping for a three-way contest at the one and only constituency it planned to file an election candidate from, around this time.
Accepting the people’s mandate, H D Kumaraswamy showed off his gratitude to all those who have voted for the party candidate Syed Yasrab Ali Quadri. “I will remain supportive of the party workers and leaders who worked for the party during the bypolls,” said Kumaraswamy.
According to the final figures from EC provided on the 17th of April, Belgaum experienced a 56.02 percent turnout of voter while the voter turn-out at Basavakalyan was 61.58 percent and the voter turnout at Maski was 70.46 percent.
