India Records Highest Number of Daily Deaths With 4,205 Fatalities

India has logged its highest number of deaths due to Covid-19 on a single day with 4,205 fatalities. With 3,48,421 fresh cases in the past 24 hours, the country’s total coronavirus tally has reached 2,33,40,938.

Total recoveries in India till date is 1,93,82,642 while active cases stand at 37,04,099. Total number of vaccination done so far is 17,52,35,991 and the death toll has reached 2,54,197.

 

An expert panel has recommended the use of Bharat Biotech’s coronavirus vaccine, Covaxin for Phase 2/3 of human clinical trial on those between the age of 2 and 18 years. Trials will take place on 525 subjects across multiple sites in India including AIIMS, Delhi, AIIMS, Patna and Meditrina Institute of Medical Sciences, Nagpur.

 

A hotel that has been converted into a Covid care centre in Bhavnagar, Gujarat had a fire breat out early on Wednesday morning. Sources have reported that there have been no deaths due to it and 61 patients have been moved from the facility.

Up to May 11, 30,75,83,991 samples have been tested for Covid-19 including the 19,83,804 samples that were tested yesterday.

 

Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Tirath Singh Rawat, having received 80 MT of oxygen from the Central government, dispatched it to various stations across the state through Oxygen Express at the railway station at Harrawala.

 

Volunteers from across various faiths such as Hindu temples, Muslim groups and Sikh relief organizations in the United States have gathered relief material including oxygen concentrators and electrical transformers to ship to overwhelmed hospitals as well as raised millions for everything from food to firewood for funeral pyres as India grapples with the monumental surge in Covid-19 infections.

 

Help from other quarters also reached India as a consignment of medical equipment including 200 oxygen concentrators were sent by South Korea to the second most populous country in the world struggling with the Covid-19 crisis.

 

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has changed its testing strategy in view of the rapid spread of Covid-19 infection, and has recommended an increased use of Rapid Antigen Tests (RAT). This is primarily to scale up field testing that will help detect cases early and isolate them to reduce transmission.

Variants of the virus are perceived to be more vicious that the original version as they are more easily transmitted, are more deadly and also possess the ability to get past certain vaccines.
