Sonia Gandhi has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a letter addressed to him to arrange for free education to be imparted to children at the Navodaya Vidyalayas, who have lost their parents to Covid-19.

In the letter, the Congress President wrote, orphaned children or those who have lost one or both parents to the pandemic, are in a state of immense loss facing a bleak future with no avenue for a stable education.

Gandhi said, “Amidst the devastation caused by the pandemic and the heart-wrenching tragedies being faced by affected families, news of young children losing one or both parents to Covid-19 are the most poignant. These children are left with the trauma of loss and no support towards a stable education or future.”

She went on to suggest to the Prime Minister to extend support in the form of education to these children who have lost both or an earning parent at the Navodaya Vidhyalayas on account of the coronavirus pandemic, and said, “I feel that as a nation, we owe it to them to give them hope for a robust future after the unimaginable tragedy that has befallen them.”

Sonia Gandhi also reminisced how the inception of these Navodaya Vidyalayas across the length and breadth of the country was one of the most significant contributions of her along with her late husband and former Prime Minister of the country Rajiv Gandhi.

She recalled how it was a dream of her husband to see the children of his country gain high – quality education that is both affordable and accessible to talented individuals, predominantly from the rural areas. There are approximately 661 such schools that are being run across the nation at the moment, according to Gandhi.

The pandemic that has claimed the lives of more than 2 lakh people in India so far, has also taken away one or both parents of young children leaving them bereft of a stable future or an access to proper education, as per reports.
