Uttar Pradesh has logged 3,371 fresh cases of coronavirus infections in the past 24 hours along with 196 deaths. The state now has a total case load of 16.8 lakh.

According to state government reports, the districts that have registered the maximum number of deaths include Varanasi (14), Jhansi (12), Lucknow (11) and Kanpur and Meerut (10 each).

A study is to be conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) that will test the effectiveness of the two vaccines in circulation in India- AstraZeneca's Covishield and Bharat Biotech's Covaxin, in staving off the infection from evolving into a severe form.

The survey, a first of its kind study, is scheduled to begin from next week and will be conducted on 4,000 of those above the age of 45 years who have taken either one or both doses of either vaccine.

Chhattisgarh has reported 2,829 new cases of coronavirus on Wednesday taking the total count to 9, 59,544 while the death toll climbed to 12,779 with 56 deaths.

After a total of 997 discharges from various hospitals across the state, the number of recoveries reached 8,93,258. 4,100 others completed their home isolation during the day and the number of active cases, according to state officials stands at 53,480.

With 26,811 new cases of COVI-19 and 530 more deaths, Karnataka on Wednesday reported a total of 24, 99,784 cases and a death toll of 26,929. During the course of the day there were also 40,741 discharges.

Bengaluru Urban alone accounted for 6,433 cases of the total number of fresh cases recorded on Wednesday. The city also saw 18,342 discharges and 285 deaths.

The total number of active cases in the state stands at 4,09,924. Positivity rate for the day was at 19.48 percent and case fatality rate (CFR) at 1.97 percent.

As per official reports, cases of black fungus or mucormycosis have been detected in Himachal Pradesh till now.

People whose immune system has been weakened due to Covid, diabetes, kidney disease, liver or cardiac disorders, age-related issues, or those on medication for auto-immune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis are more susceptible to this and are likely to contract mucormycosis.
