The Gateway of India is an arch landmark in Bombay, India, that was created in the twentieth century. The monument was built to commemorate King George V and Queen Mary's arrival at Apollo Bunder during their 1911 journey to India.
The foundation stone for the Gateway of India, which was built in the Indo-Saracenic style, was laid on March 31, 1911. The building is a basalt arch that stands 26 metres (85 ft) tall. George Wittet's final design was approved in 1914, and the monument's construction was completed in 1924. Later, Viceroys and new Governors of Bombay used the Gateway as a symbolic ceremonial entrance to India. It allowed people to enter and leave India.
The Gateway of India, which overlooks the Arabian Sea, is located on the waterfront at Apollo Bunder, at the end of Chhatrapati Shivaji Marg in South Mumbai. The monument is known as Mumbai's Taj Mahal and is the city's most popular tourist attraction.
