Captain Virat Kohli addressed the media days before his squad is to embark on the flight to England to face New Zealand in the World Test Championship finale. Although he seemed as unfazed as he always does, he did not shy from sending a stern message to the public that seemed more like an indirect challenge to his team members.

"Don’t board the flight if you think New Zealand have an extra edge in the finals." he said, later assuming his familiar stance of self assurance he added, "We’re going to board that flight knowing that we’re at equal terms with New Zealand."

Currently under quarantine in Mumbai, the players along with the members of staff will arrive in England on June 3 and after the requisite RT-PCR tests in Southampton they will be allowed to gradually train.

In a press conference where Head coach Ravi Shastri and Skipper Kohli faced the media, the latter said, "WTC final will be challenging for the team. But it's time to enjoy what we've has done in past years. There's no pressure on me and there won't be in the future. It's the final, so it's time to enjoy it."

It is perceived that the New Zealand team will have an upper hand in the finals over the Indian side from the very beginning as they will have more time to acclimatize themselves with the local conditions. India, on the other hand, will have time for barely five practice sessions and no warm-up games once they are through with their 10-day quarantine.

This however, does not perturb the captain who said there have been times in the past when they had "landed three days prior to the schedule and had a great tour," and stated, "it’s all in the head."

When asked to comment about the long pause between the WTC final and the England series, Kohli said this would mean an optimum opportunity for the team to "reflect and relax." He added, "just for the guys to roam around freely, considering that we will have a five-Test series coming. It will give us time to regroup and that is required before an important series like this."

The World Test Championship (WTC) final between India and New Zealand will be in Southampton, starting 18 June.
