There has been a constant buzz around the inaugural ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final due to get underway in less than ten days’ time. With the New Zealand side already getting acclimatized with the conditions playing a two-match test series against England in the latter’s home ground, there is a natural proclivity towards the Kiwis as cricket commentators, experts and former players pick favorites and make speculations.

Former Indian batting star Gundappa Viswanath is one among the latest to join the whir.

In a recent interview, Viswanath did not mince his words in cautioning India of what they are to face, a good New Zealand side.

Viswanath said, “Both the teams will be playing at a neutral venue. It will be a good contest. New Zealand is a good side. India can’t take them lightly. The atmosphere will be different.”

The maestro also added that with a series win over Australia and England behind them, India also has an edge over the New Zealand team. He said, “India has an edge over New Zealand. It will be an exciting clash. Winning in Australia and vs England will be a confidence booster for India in the WTC final.”

The former cricketing star went on to add, “It will be India bowlers vs the New Zealand batsmen in the WTC final. India’s bowling is super strong right now. Look at Shami, Bumrah, Siraj and Ishant. They all are in good touch. Siraj did a wonderful job in Australia. I am sure he will do the job for Virat in the WTC final too.”

The batting legend has 91 Tests for India between 1969 and 1983, scoring 6080 runs. He played 25 ODIs for India between 1974 and 1982, scoring 439 runs.

India currently ranks Number one in the ICC Test rankings while New Zealand comes a close second. Both teams are already in England where New Zealand is playing England in a Two match test series, the first of which ended in a draw. They will face India on June 18 in the WTC final at the Ageas Bowl in Southampton.
