Novak Djokovic made his way down the pages of history once again by pulling himself up from an impossible situation of two sets to love down and defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas to win a 19th Grand Slam title at the French Open.
Djokovic who is the current world number one is the first man in 52 years to have won all four major Slam titles at least a couple of times. He is now only one title behind the likes of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal who jointly hold the all-time list.
It was an excruciating defeat for Tsitsipas who was on top of his game from the start right up to the beginning of the third set. However, quickly elevating his game near the end, Djokovic won the match 6-7 (6-8), 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 and went on to claim the Grand Slam title.
This was the 34-year old player’s second French Open win after his 2016 victory. He is the proud title holder of nine Australian Opens, five Wimbledon titles and three at the US Open.
Djokovic is the third man in history to win all four Slams on more than one occasion and the first since the record was set by Rod Laver back in 1969. He is also the first man in history to reach the point of victory after coming back twice from two sets down in the course of the same tournament.
At the moment, the star player holds 84 career titles in all and after Sunday's grand victory, he got catapulted to reaching an amount of $150 million in prize money.
After the gruelling match that lasted a good Four hours and eleven minutes, Djokovic said, “It was an electric atmosphere.”
The Serb added, “It's a dream. It's difficult to win the title against a great player. It was a difficult three days physically and mentally.”
Tsitsipas, a man who neither lacks in self-belief nor ambition, was seen handling the situation very well. In the opening game, he faced two break points but stood his ground and held on as best he could.
