It has been told and retold to us how a person's character, attitude toward difficulties, and tenacity form his or her destiny. Then there are a select handful whose tenacity not only changes their own future, but also the lives of countless others. This is the narrative of Azim Premji, an Indian entrepreneur.

Azim Premji before Wipro

Azim Premji's father was the owner of a company that made "hydrogenated cooking fats." 'Western India Vegetable Products' was the name of the company. If you recall, Wipro's first product was Dalda Ghee. Azim studied engineering at Stanford University. However, due to his father's untimely death, he had to arrive promptly, leaving everything behind.

The year was 1966. Azim was only 21 years old at the time. He had to take over a $2 million firm from scratch.

After Azim Premji, Wipro

The government shifted in 1977. Morarji Desai's new government was anti-FDI and anti-foreign corporations. Coca-Cola and other companies were urged to leave. IBM, India's lone IT Company, has also left the country. Azim Premji has a foresight into the future. The hole left by IBM's departure provided him with a ripe and ready market. Wipro was titled from Western India Vegetable Product.

It began providing IT-related services as well. Wipro also worked with Sentinel Computer Corporation, a company based in the United States. This marked the start of the Indian IT revolution, which revolutionised the entire country, particularly after liberalization

Collaborations in the Future

Wipro worked with 'General Electric' for a short time in 1989. Medical imaging and diagnostics equipment were made by Wipro-GE. They collaborated with Acer to develop personal computers for the Indian market in 1999.

Wipro was also the first Indian computer manufacturer to be certified Y2K-compliant by the National Software Testing Laboratory in the United States in 1999. With Royal Dutch Telecom, it also offered internet services in India (KPN).

Legend

Azim Premji is a well-known businessman. He took over the reins of a company 50 years before young CEOs dominated the Indian startup landscape. He grew it from a $2 million business to a $12 billion one. Azim Premji is a legend because he lived for many people, not just himself.

He elected to contribute half of his Wipro stock so that many more lives may be changed. Several significant prizes have been bestowed to him. He has been awarded the Padma Vibhushan by the government of India. The best honour we can bestow on him is for him to become a better citizen and contribute to his vision of transforming India and making it a better place.
