Tuesday, 22nd June 2021

The Central government on Thursday made operational the national helpline and reporting platform-155260, in their bid to curb cyber fraudulence that incurs financial losses for people across the country.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has engendered the number to prevent loss of finances on account of internet fraud, said the Centre in a statement. The step has further reinforced the prime minister's commitment to ensure the citizens of this country enjoy a safe and secure milieu for digital payments.

There was a soft launch of the helpline earlier this year on April 1 and will be operational in seven states and union territories currently. These include Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Telangana, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh. According to government sources, the rest of the country will be able to access it in a phased manner.

The reporting platform along with the helpline 155260 (Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System) has been made operational by the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C). They were actively backed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), all major banks, payment banks, wallets, and online merchants.

According to the government's statement, the system has so far saved over Rs 1.85 crore of defrauded money from getting into the hands of fraudsters. States like Delhi and Rajasthan have saved Rs 58 lakh and Rs 53 lakh respectively, they said.

The way this helpline works is as follows.

  • Swindled parties can call on helpline number 155260, which is manned by the police of concerned states, who then note down the details of the caller and transaction involved.
  • These are forwarded on the Citizen Financial Cyber Frauds Reporting and Management System in the form of a ticket.
  • The ticket then goes further up to specific banks, wallets, merchants, etc.
  • The victim receives a text with an acknowledgment number of the complaint using which they can submit complete details of the fraud on the national cybercrime reporting portal (https://cybercrime.gov.in/). This has to be done within 24 hours. The SMS also gives necessary directions to complete this step.
  • The concerned financial organization checks further details on their internal systems and holds back the money if still not withdrawn by the fraud party. In case it has been moved to a different bank, the ticket gets escalated to them.
  • This is repeated until the money is saved.
