According to news agency ANI, which cited officials from the central government, India has reported a total of 40 cases of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) attributable to the Delta Plus type. "India has reported 40 instances of the new coronavirus Delta Plus strain. Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu account for the majority of the instances. The government sources were cited as adding, "It is still a variety of interest." The number was 22 till Tuesday.

Delta Plus was described as a "variant of concern" by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) in a statement released on Tuesday (VoC). The ministry made the announcement based on an examination conducted by a consortium of genome sequencing labs, which claimed to have discovered that the altered virus spreads more easily. Union health secretary Rajesh Bhushan had labeled Delta Plus a "variant of interest" (VoI) earlier that day at a press briefing, indicating that the variant is being examined.

The ministry also stated in its statement that it has notified the states where the claimed variant had been discovered. "Public health response actions in Maharashtra, Kerala, and Madhya Pradesh have been advised to be more targeted and effective while remaining roughly the same." According to the statement, "chief secretaries have been ordered to conduct prompt containment measures in various districts and clusters."

Delta Plus is a mutation of the Delta Covid-19 variation, also known as the B1.617.2 strain, which was discovered in India for the first time. Delta Plus is classified as an AY.1 variant in science, and according to the study mentioned by the MoHFW statement, it affects the lungs "more powerfully" and may impair the ability of antibodies to neutralise it.

Kappa, also known as the B1.617.1 strain, is another variety that was first discovered in India. The Delta variety, on the other hand, is thought to be behind the second Covid-19 wave, which swept the country in April-May and peaked over those two months. The country experienced record new Covid-19 days on many occasions during the second wave, which has now receded, as well as daily mortality due to the viral disease.
