Milkha Singh, a great Indian athlete who died on Friday at the age of 91 due to Covid-19 problems, has received a flood of tributes. Milkha Singh, a three-time Olympian and Asian and Commonwealth Games gold medalist, put Indian athletics on the map with his achievements on the track.
Milkha Singh died five days after his wife, former India volleyball captain Nirmal Kaur, died in Chandigarh from Covid-19. Milkha acquired the illness in May and was discharged later that month from a private hospital in Mohali. On June 3, he was readmitted to the ICU at PGIMER's Covid Hospital. Although his condition had improved since his admittance, his oxygen saturation levels had dropped before he died on Friday.

Former India ope ner Virender Sehwag paid tribute to the renowned athlete on social media, writing that the name MIlkha is synonymous with courage and willpower.
"Although the great guy #MilkaSingh ji has passed away, the name Milkha will always be associated with courage and willpower. What a gentleman. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family. Shanti Om, "Sehwag put pen to paper.

Milkha Singh's death was mourned by many, including Union Minister for Sports Kiren Rijiju and former India spinner Anil Kumble.
"I was deeply heartbroken to learn of Milkha Singh Ji's death. His legacy as a true legend and icon will live forever. Please accept my heartfelt condolences for his family and friends "Kumble remarked.
"India's star has faded. Even though Milkha Singh Ji is no longer with us, he will continue to encourage every Indian to shine for the country. My heartfelt sympathies go out to the family. I wish for the tranquilly of his soul "Kiren Rijiju penned the piece.
Milkha Singh is best known for his 400m run at the 1960 Rome Olympics, where he made history as the first Indian male to compete in an Olympic final. He led until the 200m mark, but he couldn't hold on to his lead and finished fourth.
In that race, his time of 45.73 became the Indian national record, which he held for nearly 40 years. Milkha Singh received India's fourth highest civilian honour, the Padma Shri.
