Mithali Raj, the captain of India's ODI women's team, and star batter Smriti Mandhana lauded Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the two-time World Cup winning captain, on Monday, calling him "an inspiration and institution in himself."
Dhoni, the first skipper to win every ICC trophy, announced his retirement from international cricket on Saturday, more than a year after his last appearance for India in a World Cup semifinal loss to New Zealand.
“In and of himself, Dhoni is an inspiration and an institution. Mithali stated in a video uploaded by the BCCI on its official Twitter handle, "He truly walks the talk. He is the dream of every small-town youngster who dreams to play for the country and achieve it all."
“In addition to his steel nerves, innate calm, and cool demeanour even in the face of adversity, I liked him for his innate calm and cool demeanour.
“Of course, his unmistakable style, whether batting or wicket-keeping.”
Dhoni made his ODI debut in 2004 and went on to play 350 ODIs, 90 Tests, and 98 T20Is for India.
“That helicopter shot, outside of any cricketing manual, is a testament of his creativity, brilliance, and self-belief,” the veteran of the Indian women's team stated. He'll be the only one of his kind. MS Dhoni will go down in history as a legend.”
India also became the world number one in Test cricket for the first time under Dhoni's leadership.
Dhoni was also praised by Mandhana.
“In the 2011 World Cup final, I vividly remember how Dhoni sir stepped out to bat. In another video posted by the cricket board, Mandhana remarked, "The confidence on his face was something that motivated me."
“I'm confident he's motivated everyone around him to improve as a cricketer, a leader, and, most importantly, a human being. “Thank you, Dhoni sir, for your contribution,” she added.
