Whatsapp’s Disappearing photos feature

All you need to know about Whatsapp's new feature.

Wednesday, 30th June 2021

WhatsApp is rolling out a disappearing photo feature for beta users, called "view once." This is similar to how the upcoming Instagram media features work. Once the recipient opens the photo and leaves the chat, the photo disappears. This feature is currently available for Android WhatsApp users.

Screenshots shared by WaBetaInfo show that users only need to select a photo from the gallery to submit the missing photo. After selecting, you need to click on the clock icon and the app will be displayed near the "Add Title" column. Then you can send the missing photos to your friends and family.

This function is suitable for videos, photos, and GIFs. If you don't see the View button once when you share media with someone, you haven't received the feature yet. People will find this feature in WhatsApp Android version 2.21.14.3.

What else you need to know before using this WhatsApp feature

The cited sources say that if you disable receipt reading, the recipient can still see if you've opened the photo or video collection to view once, but you won't be able to verify when the recipient opened your image.

If you share a missing image in a group, even if you turn off the read receipt, you can see when other participants open the expired photo. It should be noted that the recipient can save the photo or video using the screenshot or screen recording function, and WhatsApp won't even notify you because there is no screenshot detection.

You can use the "View once" button to share photos and videos in groups, and you can see all the people who opened them in the "Messages" section. "Contacts blocked in normal groups can still open those photos and videos. In fact, they can't send you messages or make calls, but they can still interact with you in groups," WaBetaInfo said.

If you use the "View once" button to send photos to anyone who has not enabled this feature, the feature will continue to work. In addition, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently confirmed the existence of this feature and hinted that it will be open to everyone soon. Therefore, it is expected that this feature will be publicly released soon.
