Andy Murray proved that he can win a five-set match at Wimbledon at the age of 34, despite having undergone two hip surgery.
Former World No. 1 Novak Djokovic battled to beat Oscar Otte, a little-known German qualifier, 6-3 4-6 4-6 6-4 6-2 in the second round.
Murray had never lost a Grand Slam match to a player rated as low as 151 Otte, and he had never lost a match at the All England Club until the third round.
Murray appeared to be on the point of losing both of those personal milestones on day three of the championships when the play was momentarily interrupted at 2-2 in the fourth set due to looming darkness forcing the Centre Court roof to be closed so that the competition could continue under floodlights.
However, the 118th-ranked Murray, who is playing on a wildcard this year as he works his way back to full fitness after hip resurfacing surgery in 2019, was able to collect his thoughts and change his tactics, winning 10 of the next 14 games to book a third-round match against Canadian 10th seed Denis Shapovalov.
Murray won Wimbledon twice, first in 2013, when he became Britain's first male champion in 77 years, and then again in 2016. He's been plagued by injuries since then, and this is his first appearance in the tournament in four years.
“I liked the ending, but not so much the middle. What a fantastic environment to play in. "I needed everyone's help tonight, and they came through," Murray said during an on-court interview.
"I needed to try something new. I began to go for my shots more aggressively, dictating more points. I was being a little pessimistic, and I didn't make the best selections due of the lack of matches." The last couple of sets, I played correctly. It was a good first set and a half. He went on to say, "I'd like to modify the bit in the middle."
