According to data published on Thursday by the Union Health Ministry, India's total number of COVID-19 cases has risen to 3,04,11,634, with 48,786 new infections reported in a single day, while recoveries have surpassed 2.94 crores.
The death toll rose to 3,99,459, with 1,005 new fatalities, according to figures updated at 8 a.m.
Meanwhile, Zydus Cadila, an Indian pharmaceutical company, announced on Thursday that it has filed to the country's drug authorities for emergency use permission of its COVID-19 vaccine and expects to produce up to 120 million doses per year.
Although cases of the coronavirus in India have decreased since a disastrous peak in April and May, experts have warned of a third wave and emphasised that mass immunisation remains one of the strongest defences against the pandemic.
