With 39,796 new cases of coronavirus logged in India yesterday, the total count rose to 3,05,85,229. This is the second time since June 29 that the country recorded less than 40,000 daily cases indicating a steady downward trend in infections.

The number of active cases, that also has been nose-diving, has now come down to 4,82,071 that comprises of 1.58 per cent of the total cases. The country’s cumulative COVID recovery rate has moved up to 97.11 per cent.

As per data from the Union Health Ministry, India has surpassed the 4 lakh-mark in the number of deaths due to Covid-19 with 723 more cases of death recorded. The cumulative fatalities now stand at 4,02,728.

With the central government’s continuous endeavour to hasten the inoculation drive in the country, the total number of vaccine doses administered so far is more than 35 crore. With four vaccines- Covishield, Covaxin, Russia's Sputnik V and Moderna, approved for use in India till now, the government is targeting vaccinating all adults by the end of 2021.

Uttar Pradesh government has eased lockdown restrictions to some extent and allowed gyms to reopen at fifty per cent capacity. Gym owners and fitness trainers expressed their relief after the announcement having suffered massive losses during the lockdown. A gym owner in Moradabad said they are allowing 25 per cent customers in, who are allowed only an hour or workout. He said they follow all COVID appropriate protocols and sanitizes equipment twice every day.

In the midst of Covid-19 vaccines in Pune, the mayor announced on Sunday Covishield will not be available at any vaccination centre under the jurisdiction of Pune Municipal Corporation on that day. However, 200 doses of Covaxin will be available at each of its six centres.

In Mumbai also, the vaccination drive was cut short on Thursday by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) due to a shortage of stocks.

Mizoram recorded 91 new cases of Covid-19 on Monday taking the total caseload in the state to 21,337. Total recoveries here are 17,661 and positivity rate is 11.52 per cent. Number of active cases is 3,581 and death toll has reached 95.

With the ashes of those cremated after passing away due to coronavirus infection during the second wave of the pandemic, a park is to be developed at a crematorium in Bhopal.
