Updates on Jeff Bezos’s boundless wealth
Thursday, 8th July 2021
The net worth of the world’s richest man Jeff Bezos has reached a jaw dropping $211 billion after the shares of Amazon saw a surge on July 6, according the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
News of the decision taken by the United States Defense Department on July 6 to call off its $10 billion JEDI cloud-computing project with Microsoft, triggered the share prices of Amazon to gain 4.7 per cent. This led Bezos to accumulate $8.4 million and add it to his already flourishing corpus, reported Bloomberg.
As per statement released by the Pentagon, the only providers who are “capable of meeting the department’s requirements” are Microsoft and Amazon.com and added that it will now launch a new multivendor cloud computing contract wherein both the companies could get their hands on the contracts.
In recent times, it was Tesla’s founder Elon Musk whose total accumulated wealth came close to Bezos’. In January this year Musk logged a net worth of $210 billion, according to the Bloomberg report.
Jeff Bezos had decided to call it a day when he abdicated his positon as CEO of Amazon, 27 years after he founded the company. On July 5 he had passed the post over to Andy Jassy. He continues to serve as Executive Chairman of the company and as per Bloomberg is still in possession of 11 per cent of the company’s shares.
This new addition to the wealth of the 57-year old billionaire, even beat the record haul he had witnessed last year after the pandemic struck, when the Amazon stock prices surged catapulting his net worth to $206.9 billion.
Musk is still holding on to his spot as the second richest man in the world with a net worth of $180.8 despite a knock down in Tesla shares on Tuesday. The third place is held by French luxury goods magnate Bernard Arnault at $168.5 billion.
Also making news recently was Bezos’s ex-wife MacKenzie Scott, who happens to be the 15th-richest person in the world, despite giving away $2.7 billion this year, had her wealth leap by $2.9 billion on Tuesday.
