The state health department in Tripura claimed on Saturday that they have detected 138 cases of the Delta Plus variant of coronavirus in the state. The Central government however, has denied any such possibility, disputing the state’s claim and said no Delta Plus in the samples sent from Tripura to the National Institute of Biomedical Genomics, Kalyani, West Bengal.
Delta Plus is the new variety of the already existing Delta variant that has been recently found in India. The Delta variant was the primary cause of the second wave of the pandemic that had the country in its clutches the past few months.
The Union Health Ministry on Sunday clarified in their statement about the situation and said there were a total of 152 samples sent from Tripura for testing to the Kalyani centre for genome sequencing, of which only 3 samples had tested positive for B.1.1.7 and 11 samples had tested positive for B.1.617.1 (kappa). They said that 138 samples had tested positive for B.1.617.2 (Delta) and that “there was no case of Delta Plus reported among these samples.”
On Saturday the state surveillance officer of Tripura Deep Kumar Debbarma gave the picture of the state’s situation where the new variants are concerned and said, Tripura's West District has the maximum number of Delta Plus variant cases, 115.
Subhasish Debbarma, Director, Health Services went on to appeal to the people of the state and said, “Delta Plus variant is highly infectious than plain Delta. It can infect the lungs. I appeal to people to follow corona guidelines to prevent the spread of the virus.”
Several states across the country have reported the presence of the Delta Plus lineage of the virus. Since the Delta variant had already been dubbed as a ‘variant of concern’ by the World Health Organization, the Delta Plus variant has also been categorized likewise.
It is however, yet to be ascertained by health experts as to how lethal or how much more severe and easily transmissible is the Delta Plus variant as compared to the Delta variant.
Cases of Delta Plus continue to be seen only in pockets across the country and being a variant that has been around since April, its spread so far has not yet indicated that it is more transmissible than Delta.
