After winning the boys' singles title in the famous tournament in London last week, Wimbledon junior champion Samir Banerjee is on cloud nine. After defeating compatriot Victor Lilov 7-5, 6-3 in the final at the All England Club on Sunday, Indian-American Banerjee etched his name in tennis history.

Samir Banerjee, 17, became the first American to win the junior Wimbledon tournament in six years, and the first Indian to win a junior singles title in 12 years since Yuki Bhambri.

Samir Banerjee, whose father Kunal is from Assam and mother Usha is from Andhra Pradesh, joined an exclusive group of Indian players who have won the Wimbledon junior singles title.

When Ramanathan Krishnan won the junior Wimbledon championship in 1954, he became the first Indian to win a major, a record that was repeated by his son Ramesh Krishnan in 1970 and Leander Paes in 1990. In 1970, Ramesh Krishnan won the junior French Open, and in 1990, Paes won the US Open.

When questioned about his experience sharing the record with legends like Leander Paes, Samir was visibly ecstatic.

"I'd want to express my gratitude to everyone in India who has supported me during the tournament." I obviously have Indian ancestors. My parents were born and raised in India. I've travelled to India numerous times. At the RK Khanna Tennis Stadium, I have competed. I am a representative of the United States, but I also represent India.

"I began playing when I was about 5 or 6 years old." On weekends, I enjoy playing with my father. I used to play baseball and soccer as a kid, but it was tennis' individual character that drew me in. It is up to me whether I win or lose. I enjoy the challenge that this activity provides.

"It's an honour to be associated with Leander Paes. He also won the boys singles title at Wimbledon, which I learned about. In the long run, I'd like to compete in a professional competition and win it "Rajdeep Sardesai of India Today spoke with Samir Banerjee.

Samir Banerjee, who lives in New Jersey, will now take a break from the tour to pursue a degree at Columbia University in either economics or political science in the following months.

Congratulations to Samir Banerjee for winning the junior Wimbledon title. It's an honour to be associated with somebody like Leander Paes.
