Election strategist Prashant Kishor met with Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday at the former Congress President’s residence. Speculations suggest that this could be a meeting of consequence as it could result in not conceptualizing a new strategy for the party ahead of the Assembly polls in Punjab due in 2022 as believed by many, but “something bigger” like the 2024 national election.

Although the meeting was initially linked with the tumultuous situation in Punjab where the party is making an attempt at negotiating peace between its two leaders- Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and his rival Navjot Singh Sidhu, sources say Prashant Kishor is being consulted to play a major role in getting the them battle-ready for the next Lok Sabha polls.

The meeting that lasted a couple of hours was made more significant by the presence of two other members of the Gandhi family, Sonia Gandhi who joined in virtually and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. The presence of all three members of the Gandhi family also points to the possibility according to sources, that all three of them are in this together and any strategic decision they arrive at will be unanimous.

Also present were Congress national general secretaries KC Venugopal, and Harish Rawat. Harish Rawat is the party's in-charge for Punjab and Kishor also happens to be the chief minister of Punjab Amarinder Singh's political advisor.

The meeting also holds added significance as their last meeting almost five years ago during the UP elections of 2017, had ended in bad blood between the poll strategist and Rahul Gandhi. At the time, the strategy failed to take off and BJP won the polls. Kishor had then attributed the failure to Congress’ arrogance and stubbornness and said there was no question of working with them in the future.

Kishor’s meeting with NCP chief Sharad Pawar had set off buzz of a combined opposition strategy getting hatched to take on the BJP in 2024.

However, the strategist has not admitted to any involvement in a opposition front to take on the BJP during the next polls and said, “I don't believe a Third or Fourth Front could emerge as a successful challenge to the current dispensation.”
