Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut asserted on Wednesday that there is little chance the Opposition has during the 2024 general elections against the Bharatiya Janata Party, if they do not are not able to have a face. Raut added that Sharad Pawar, leader of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) is the ideal candidate to taken on Narendra Modi during the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

The Sena MP said, “Without a strong face of the Opposition, it will be difficult to defeat Modi in 2024. The Opposition currently has no face to battle against PM Modi. All opposition parties should try and find a face to fight the election.”

Raut alluded to Pawar’s seniority and stated he could be the face of the Opposition in 2024. There have been earlier instances also when Raut expressed his opinion about Sharad Pawar being the right candidate to get nominated as the face of a united Opposition.

He said, “A leader like Sharad Pawar should be made the chief of the UPA if you want to strengthen the opposition in the country. His leadership is acceptable to all.”

Raut expressed the complexity of the situation and said it is a daunting task to bring all the opposition sides together to agree on a face that will take the BHP head on in 2024. He believes it is a mammoth job as all individual parties holds themselves on a pedestal and tries to “dictate terms”.

There are some who even believe the West Bengal Chief Minister from Trinamool Congress party, Mamata Banerjee could also be a likely candidate for the role.

Raut said, “We need a face to counter the Union government like Jayaprakash Narayan against then PM Indira Gandhi in post-emergency polls, V P Singh against Rajiv Gandhi. Later, (then prime minister) Manmohan Singh and (Congress president) Sonia Gandhi duo were challenged by Narendra Modi in the 2014 general elections.”

He added, “Sharad Pawar has been a national leader for a long time. Some people think of Mamata Bannerjee after her spectacular performance in recent West Bengal polls. In such scenario, if (poll strategist) Prashant Kishor can do some magic, I will be happy.”

In recent times, political strategist Prashant Kishor had individually met Sharad Pawar and Mamata Banerjee and even called on Rahul Gandhi at his Delhi residence where he held a meeting with Rahul, Priyanka and Sonia Gandhi.
